Early reading, phonics and writing from Nursery through to Year 6 is taught using the DfE validated phonics programmes, Read Write Inc. and Read Write Inc Fresh Start (for children in Key Stage 2). This means that children have an hour of dailt phonics and writing instruction.
Beyond the phonics programmes, when children are able to decode fluently, there is a whole school reading spine which enhances reading instruction and develops children's enjoyment and success at the same time. By exposing children to carefully curated, high quality literature, children are exposed to words and ideas in ways that only the best books and poetry are able to offer.
Our teaching of non-fiction texts is well aligned with the national curriculum subjects such as history, geography and science so that children build their knowledge of the world whilst developing their reading fluency on a daily basis. Children read lots at our school.
We encourage children to write with gusto every day, including frequent teaching of letter formation, fluent handwriting and spelling. Children use their knowledge of the curriculum and apply this to longer pieces of non-fiction writing as well as many opportunities for writing stories and poetry.
